 The End

"And so to bed",  said Zeberdee. For those old enough to remember the Magic Roundabout you will recall these imortal words as the programme closed each night, and as that programme once closed, then so does this web site.

Not everything has changed, you can still find scenes that have changed very little in 150 years. Take this view of the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash Devon. Built in 1859, it still carries the main London to Penzance railway line across the Saltash River, which seperates Devon from Cornwall. The view has changed very little since 1859, and the bridge remains a masterpiece of engineering even today. This image was taken in 1980 a shows a class 50 heading over the bridge with a London Paddington to Penzance express.

Sadly however, some things have dissapeared for good. The cast iron sign pictured above once stood near to Pontypool Crane Street station. This whole area has now been re-developed and a car park and supermarket now stand on the site where this sign once stood. The image was captured in June 1980 when many such signs could still be found in and around the area. The cast iron signs themselves are now highly collectable items.

LONG LIVE THE ANORAK!

Finally, to ensure the future survival of the railway artist, I commissioned my daughter Cait (aged 7 at the time that she produced the picture for me) to produce a picture of a steam locomotive, which is produced above. I hope that one day, this picture will bring back the same happy memories to her, that the images on this web site do to me.

Thank you Cait x
